Lgv is an abbreviation for lymphogranuloma venerum.  It was for many years an Std common only in third world countries.  I can remember as a medic teaching my troops about inherent Stds they could gain in South East Asia.  This was one of them and it sounded bad.  I have been complicated in treatment as a medic, nurse and physician's assistant for 38 years now and have never made this diagnosis.  I may yet encounter is as it has become a newer question in the first world.

The illness manifests as ulcers on mucus membranes or the moist lining of body cavities like the rectum, mouth and genital organs of men and women.  It appears to be a more common determination in men who have sex with men but many such men have heterosexual relationships also. It can also appear as violet-colored raised bumps on the shaft of the penis.

If a someone has unprotected sex, rectal sex and more than one partner they are at risk for this and other Stds.  Painful mucus membrane ulcers with swollen glands or lymph nodes locally is the most common symptom.  This bacteria can damage lymph nodes severely and impede the flow of lymph fluid locally resulting in permanent gigantic swelling of the genitals of men called elephantiasis.

The determination is made when Dna from Chlamydia is detected in ulcers or a culture determined for Chlamydia is grown from fluid obtained from ulcers.  No test currently ready is approved for specimens obtained rectally.  These must be evaluated by the Cdc and must be submitted to then via your local health department.

If your doctor or other health-care supplier presuppose this in you, they will probably gain specimens of blood and body fluids and then treat you with oral antibiotics for 7 days.
